The term
'nave' is given to the central part of the church in which the ordinary people would have
stood. Seating, sometimes of stone and built into the side wall, was provided for the old
and sick. Sometimes wooden benches were provided against the wall. This may well be the
origin of the expression that the 'weak can go to the wall'.
In later years benches were provided for everyone. Centuries later still, churches
provided fixed pews.
